THE AREA to the southeast of the Propylaiaon the Athenian Akropolishas been examined by FriedrichVersakis1and Gorham Phillips Stevens2 and identified as the Sanctuaryof Artemis Brauronia.Most of the evidence available for an architectural reconstructionconsists of rock cuttings and the lowest courses of masonry located in the eastern and southeastern regions of the sanctuary.These remains have recently been re-examined;the result of the new study is the observationof previouslyunnoted features and the identificationof several architecturalphases within the sanctuary.The dual purpose of this study is to present new evidence and to offer a new architectural interpretation;the physicaldata will be presented first, followed by an analysis and a reconstructionof the plan.3
