It depicts the goddess standing, wearing a short chiton covered by a himation belted under her breasts. She wears shoes. She extends her right arm forward and raises her left. Her head, turned slightly to her left, features a hairstyle of wavy locks gathered into a knot at the top and tied with a ribbon. Terracotta with traces of polychromy. Magna Graecia, Canosa, 3rd century BC. H 44.5 cm. Important polychrome terracotta statue of Artemis from Canosa. Magna Graecia, 3rd century BC. 17.52 in. high. Formerly in the Zühlsdorf collection, 1987. The Canosa pottery, located in Daunia, north of Apulia, demonstrates an interesting combination of indigenous tradition and Greek culture. The large statuettes were partly produced in Tarentum, then reworked, and often used as appliqué figures on large vases. This isolated statue probably adorned the hypogeum of a wealthy local notable.
