Terracotta and traces of polychromy. Magna Graecia, Canosa, 3rd century BC. H_44.5 cm Important Canossan polychrome terracotta statue of Artemis. Magna Graecia, 3rd century BC 17.52 in. high. Former Zühlsdorf collection, 1987. The productions of Canosa, located in Daunia, north of Apulia, bear witness to an interesting combination of indigenous tradition and Greek culture. The large statuettes were partly produced in Tarentum, then reworked, and often used as appliqué figures on large vases. This one, isolated, probably decorated the hypogeum of a wealthy local notable.
